FREE AS A BIRD BOOKS

Full Site Coming Soon!

Welcome to Free as a Bird Books! I’m Jeanell, founder and owner, and I’m so happy that you’re here. As an educator, avid reader, and mom of four, I wholeheartedly believe that books can change the world. Ever since I was a young girl, I’ve always found the library to be a safe haven and books to be the best of friends.

We read to learn, we read to feel, to escape, to become- books are magical!

In this little corner of the internet you’ll find your one-stop bookshop featuring a carefully curated selection of books emphasizing titles written by authors of color. While white authors and publishing staff make up 80% of the publishing industry and children’s books continue to feature animals and white protagonists at a much higher percentage than characters of color, our goal is to amplify marginalized voices (Lee and Low Books). With titles ranging from children’s to adult, and a myriad of available genres, you’re bound to find a book to love.

In addition to being an online shop, Free as a Bird Books also serves as a mobile pop-up bookshop in the Charleston region of South Carolina. Committed to fostering a love for reading within the community, we’ll pop up at vendor events and partner with local businesses to host one-day book sales throughout the year. We also dream of donating books to classrooms and establishing Little Free Libraries in underserved communities.

Frederick Douglass once said, “Once you learn to read, you will forever be free.” There’s freedom in children of color seeing themselves in books-representation matters. There’s freedom in reading beyond the walls of privilege to learn of world’s outside of our own. I’m so excited to see this little dream of mine come true and I know that I won’t be able to do it alone. Let’s diversify the shelves of Charleston (and beyond) one book at a time.
